Build Something Real.
A self-directed, evidence-based pathway for Carleton students building real ventures. You set the pace. Evidence moves you forward.
What is Nicol Interns & Ventures?
Nicol Interns & Ventures gives Carleton students a disciplined pathway from curiosity to company. You learn by testing real ideas with real customers, and you advance by producing evidence—not presentations.
Evidence Over Enthusiasm
Progress is measured by customer-validated outcomes, not by effort, enthusiasm or polished pitches.
Self-Directed Learning
You set the pace, test your ideas and own your progress. The program supports your journey, it does not drive it.
Real Ventures, Real Customers
Build something real that solves real problems for real customers. The ecosystem rewards doing, not just planning.
This is not a pitch competition or club house. It is a disciplined system that supports Carleton University students to establish and launch new companies grounded in real customer needs.
This program supports progression, not participation.
What This Means For You
Internships are an outcome of demonstrated readiness, not the starting point. You advance by producing evidence that meets clearly defined markers. If you are not ready to apply, that is expected. Start with the resources.
- You set the pace. Progress is driven by your activity, not by program timelines.
- Evidence is the currency. Real customer interactions, not polished pitches, move you forward.
- Resources before applications. Use learning resources on Brightspace first. Apply when you have evidence.
- Mentors are earned, not assigned. Mentorship begins at the Nicol Intern state, after demonstrated progress.
- Pitch decks are not evidence. Validated customer problems and tested solutions are evidence.

How It Works
The progression pathway from exploration to early growth venture
Progression is earned by producing evidence that meets clearly defined markers. Every resource on this website exists to help you generate that evidence. Advancement is based on demonstrated, customer-validated outcomes, not interest, effort, or untested assumptions.
Self-Directed Learner
What am I learning about the problem and customers?
Internship Applicant
Is this problem real, painful and worth solving?
Nicol Intern
Does the solution actually deliver value?
Early Growth Venture
Can this value compound through retention and growth?
Evidence Required at Each Marker
Readiness Marker (Self-Directed Learner to Internship Applicant)
You must demonstrate: a clear problem for a specific customer, a clear promise of value, proof that customers agree the problem matters, proof that your idea is different and a clear next-steps plan (30-90 days).
New Venture Marker (Internship Applicant to Nicol Intern)
You must demonstrate: customers act on the problem, customers act on your solution, at least one clear success is achieved and something real is being used by customers.
Early Growth Marker (Nicol Intern to Early Growth Venture)
You must demonstrate: customers pay or make binding commitments, success occurs more than once and evidence shows readiness to grow with a plan grounded in results.
Key Principle
Evidence, not interest or effort, is used to demonstrate learning and advancement. Curated resources are applied selectively. Passive consumption does not count as progress.
Before You Start: Founder Lessons
Lessons from experienced founders and startup builders
Before you begin experimenting with a venture idea, understand what experienced founders have learned, often the hard way. These lessons help ensure you enter with realistic expectations and professional discipline.
Most startup failure is preventable
Startups usually fail because founders build before understanding customers, avoid hard evidence, and confuse activity with progress.
Ideas don't matter; evidence does
A good idea without evidence is just an opinion. Focus on clearly defined problems, specific customers, and learning from real interactions.
Speed comes from focus, not rushing
Speed comes from narrowing the problem, choosing one customer type and testing one assumption at a time.
Customer conversations are the foundation
Nearly every successful startup story begins with talking to users, listening carefully and resisting the urge to pitch.
Differentiation is discovered, not claimed
Real differentiation comes from understanding what customers already use and seeing where those alternatives fail.
Early progress looks unimpressive
Early progress is often messy, uncertain and small in scale. What matters is whether your learning is real, documented and cumulative.

Student Expectations
Participation at any state in the Nicol Interns & Ventures program is an opportunity, not an entitlement. The Nicol Institute supports student entrepreneurs across all faculties and directs resources equitably to students who can benefit most.
Respect Mentor Time
Mentors are a valuable and scarce resource. Prepare for meetings, agree on actions, document them, and follow up.
Self-Directed Progress
Progress is paced by student activity, not milestones set by the program. Apply resources and produce evidence.
Evidence Over Enthusiasm
The team evaluates progress based on application of resources and quality of evidence produced, not polished presentations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the program
Eligibility
The Nicol Internship is open to all Carleton University students in good standing, regardless of faculty, degree level, or venture type. Whether you're in engineering, business, arts, science or any other program, you're welcome.
No. You only need an early-stage venture idea that you want to explore. No validation, customers, or testing is required at the entry stage. Openness and curiosity are the entry conditions.
No specific technical or business background is required. Students from all disciplines can contribute. Many opportunity areas are about identifying problems and testing solutions, not building complex technology.
Program
No. The Nicol Internship is not a pitch competition, accelerator or incubator for fully formed companies. It's a disciplined, evidence-based pathway where progression is earned through demonstrated customer-validated outcomes, not enthusiasm or polished pitches.
You progress through 4 states: Self-Directed Learner, Internship Applicant, Nicol Intern, and Early Growth Venture. Each transition requires evidence that meets clearly defined markers. Advancement is self-directed and based on real customer interactions, not time spent or content consumed.
The three domains are Agentic Systems (AI that takes initiative), Supply Chain Management (making complex logistics simpler) and Quantum-Safe Cryptography (preparing for post-quantum security). You don't need to be an expert in any of these -- the focus is on identifying problems and testing solutions.
Yes. Progress is paced by student activity, not milestones set by the program. You move forward when you produce the required evidence, whether that takes weeks or months.
Internship
The Nicol Internship pays $8,000 total -- $4,000 per term for 2 terms. This is funded by the Wesley M. Nicol Foundation and the Catalyst Fund.
No. Internships are an outcome of readiness, not the starting point. You must progress through the pathway and demonstrate evidence at each marker. There is no guarantee of funding, internships, or venture success.
Yes. Mentors are assigned to Nicol Interns (State 3) who have passed the New Venture Marker. Mentors provide hands-on advisory support, help with product development and connect you with external advisors. Note that mentors do not serve as investors, board members, or customers.
Application
You'll need: personal information (name, faculty, student ID, Carleton email), business information (if applicable), written responses of 200-300 words each on your business description, challenges and opportunities and use of funds, plus concrete expected deliverables.
Strong applications demonstrate evidence of customer validation, a clearly defined problem, and deliverables that are specific, measurable and time-bound. The team evaluates progress based on application of resources and quality of evidence, not polished presentations.
Contact the program team for current application timelines and access details. The application form is available through the program portal.
That is completely expected. Most students begin by accessing curated learning resources on Brightspace. Start there, work through the material at your own pace and apply when you have evidence of a validated problem and customer engagement. The program is designed to meet you where you are.
Practical
The program is not a substitute for coursework or academic programs. It's a complementary pathway for students who want to explore building real ventures alongside their studies.
That's part of the process. Early progress is often messy, uncertain and small in scale. What matters is whether your learning is real, documented and cumulative. The pathway is designed to help you test and learn, not just succeed on the first try.
The Nicol Interns & Ventures program is funded by the Wesley M. Nicol Foundation and the Catalyst Fund, supporting student entrepreneurs across all Carleton faculties.
